[...] The great day is nigh : è finita la caccia (and I’m still married) A witty post from a witty and informative blog written by a woman owner of Il Palazzone wine farm. It tells of the endemic need that some Tuscans have to go hunting with their gun to bring home wild boars, robins, hare, and so on. Although in the past hunting might have been an understandable practice, it has lost any justification in our days. [...]

Ciao Gino! It is something I have learned to accept and understand... but it hasn't been an easy path. We have three children now and none of them have your sensibility. Thanks for you comment.

I would never get closer than 100 feet to a hunter, and that is when he's got no gun in his hands! As a child I would cry at the sight of those shaved, naive robin heads, running away from the table and heating my parents. Lovely written post.

Ciao Joe! Great to hear from you.
The #reasonstodivorce is no joke, I can tell you... you will understand if you have a hunter in the family. Have you tried the 2005 yet?
A presto, Laura

Laura,

You sound like my mother-in-law. My wife's father is at the hunting camp every weekend from Oct-Jan. With one deer going a long way (and limited freezer space), I only usually go one weekend out of the whole season. Fortunately (or unfortunately, I suppose), there are no Brunello vines for the deer to ravage.

Salute!
Joe Herrig

Thank you for this wonderful post! How this brings back memories! We stayed in a monastery-cum-"villa" in Montalcino called I Cappuccini - just a bit south and east of Il Palazzone. We remember hearing the hunters in the early morning ferreting out the cinghiale. But mostly, we remember the cinghiale served in restaurants, and the prosciutto made of cinghiale. So good. Looking forward to a September visit this year - staying near Cortona the first week of the month. Hope we get to visit Il Palazzone...

Grazie mille davvero Jeremy, so pleased that you enjoyed it.
A word of warning for your trip: bring your woollies, it's snowing in Montalcino!

such a great post, Laura! The hunter and the gatherer! I've been in Montalcino during hunting season but I still think the best boar is the roadkill (seriously). We'll be there soon! Truly enjoyed this excellent post...
