Rosso del Palazzone VDT
The vineyards at Il Palazzone are less than 7 acres and are all planted with Sangiovese Grosso, the grape that is known in Montalcino as “Brunello.” The half acre that is authorised for the production of Rosso di Montalcino DOC receives the same attention as the vines that produce grapes destined to become Brunello. Our yields are around 5.000 kg per hectare, a result of several green harvests and selection in the vineyard. The grapes are picked by hand, usually at the beginning of October.

In 2000 the estate produced its last Rosso di Montalcino DOC, preferring to concentrate on the DOCG Brunello appellation. However, year after year a small quantity of potential Rosso di Montalcino DOC is left in the cellar. In 2007 we decided to blend this “loose” wine and make a VDT. Since it derives from several vintages, it has no vintage on the label.
Rosso del Palazzone is made from 100% Sangiovese, grown on the slopes of Montalcino and is made entirely from the property’s own grapes. The component wines qualified either as Brunello to Montalcino DOCG or Rosso di Montalcino DOC. The wines have all spent over a year in large wood barrels. The result is a “baby” Brunello, with all the characteristics of Montalcino and Sangiovese, but with the fruit, freshness and approachability of a Rosso di Montalcino.
This versatile wine is an excellent wine “a tutto pasto” i.e. suited to all courses, in particular vegetable soups, cheese and first and second courses featuring red meat. It has a remarkable price:quality ratio.
